Approach
Since Oman has no significant local manufacturers of telecommunications equipment and the network of the incumbent operator, Omantel, is broadly based on European standards, the Sultanate of Oman had adopted a policy of accepting terminal equipment that were in compliance with European standards and were accepted in European markets. This facilitated entry to most of the large manufacturers in North America and the Far East that exported to Europe as they had versions of their products that met the European standards. As a result, this approach allowed easy access to the Omani market for all large manufacturers worldwide.
Concerned Authorities
All telecommunications suppliers/importers are required to register with The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA). The responsibility for issuing Type Approval Certificates and Importation Releases for both radio and terminal telecommunications equipment has rested with the TRA.
Scope
The scope of the approvals regime covers all telecommunications equipment such as:
Telecommunications terminal equipment (TTE): Beneficiary's private telecommunication equipment that enables him to communicate through either a public or a private telecommunication network.
Radio communications equipment (RCE): Equipment, apparatus or accessories used or prepared to be used in radio telecommunications.
